The secret to choosing the right pet names

Category : pet care
Date Published : August 2, 2008

Pet owners are lucky enough that their pets cannot object over their pet names.

However, pet owners should understand that giving the wrong pet names to your pets could result to recognition and learning difficulties. Every pet owner should master the art of choosing good pet names. Here are some of them.

First, choose either one-syllable or two-syllable pet names. Your pets are more likely to recognize short names like Ben or Pam. Two-syllable names are also effective because pets listen for the first syllable or first sound only.

Second, when you pick pet names, make sure that they don’t sound like voice commands for obedience like down, come, sit or no. This could confuse your pet with his name and your command; thus, resulting to a more difficult learning process.

Third, don’t give your pet and your child the same name. This would confuse both of them and will give you a hard time as well.

Fourth, when you choose a name, make sure it won’t give you embarrassment when you shout it through your neighborhood early in the morning. Make your pet names sound pleasant to the ear.

Fifth, you can base your pet names on your pet behavior during his first few weeks. If he’s a sleepy little pup, you can call him Sleepy or maybe Lovely if she is especially cute.

Sixth, bear in mind that your pets will grow so avoid giving those names which they will outgrow. Don’t pick a name like Tiny or Puppy. It would sound a little off calling your Great Dane who stands bigger and taller than most of the dogs he meets “Titch”.

Picking the perfect name is one of the most wonderful parts of being a pet owner. Enjoy the moment but you have also make sure that the pet names you choose are easy to recognise by your pets.

    Great advice.

I had no idea dogs and cats only listen to the first or second syllable of their name.

Wow, all that time we spent naming Major Wigglesworth and he was only ever hearing “Jah”!
