But, in these recessionary-times, for how long one might ask?
Well leaving aside the current doom and gloom, recent figures from market guru’s TNS appear to show that things are pretty rosy in the pet care garden. The market for products and services geared towards caring for your pet (including food) is worth a whopping £1.65bn per year, with year-on-year growth of 5%.
Drilling down into the figures, and it emerges that cat food is growing by 5.1% year-on-year, whereas dog food is trailing slighly on 4.8%.
Comparing both these key markets, shows some interesting divergence in trends. In the dog food market, much of the increase in value is coming from dry dog food and dog treats, whereas in the in the cat food market wet cat food has helped drive growth, helped by major product launches from both Felix and Whiska, who have both taken major steps into the premium wet cat food market.
The concept of premiumisation - i.e. making fancy-looking stuff that costs more - is not new in the pet care market, but it does seem to be continuing to deliver profits to the main pet care manufacturers, so expect a lot more of it in years to come.
TNS reckon more growth will be seen in what they refer to as single-serve cat food with the continued success of pouch varieties forecast. They are also tipping cat and dog treats to continue their impressive sales growth (which is attributable to increasing public awareness of pet nutrition). Sales in Pedigree treats in the dog food market doubled last year while Whiskas are leading the cat treat market.
